Dignity: The Power of the Female Spirit
Integration of arts and heritage through chamber music, modern dance and multi-media design.
Aligned with Vision 2022 core values of Rapid City Area Schools
Project Description:
Dignity: the power of the Female Spirit in 4 movements set to the work, “Eye of the Night” by composer, David Bruce.
1. Empowerment
2. Joy
3. Protector
4. Strength
Inspired by the Dignity sculpture by Dale Lamphere, current events and local culture; the project celebrates the eternity of the female spirit and its oneness with the universe.
A community driven project to celebrate the empowerment of women through integration of chamber music, dance and multimedia design in an effort to advance a stronger social outcome for women, both Native and non-Native.
We aim to empower and celebrate the women of our community and teach respect through better understanding with a series of community workshops and lectures. Our partnerships include Rapid City Area Schools, Barefoot Dance Studio, Game Fish and Parks, Journey Historical Museum, local female leaders and professional dancers from the Crash Dance Productions Company in Minneapolis.
The culmination of the project will be a multimedia/modern dance/chamber music concert at Central High School on July 24, 2020. The concert will feature our top professional musicians, professional and local dancers celebrating the historical and cultural aspects through the empowerment of the female spirit.
In a column published in the Sioux Falls Argus Leader, Susan Claussen Bunger, instructor of Native American social systems, wrote:
"As is evident through history, humans will ultimately disillusion and betray. As is such, I have a new role model who is solid and sturdy. She literally owns a spine of steel and reminds me of the injustice in the world, but also of strength, perseverance and survival. She signifies people who have prevailed through the centuries. She represents all who resist and strive forward. She portrays a rallying cry for those who wish to be heard and valued. She stands strong and proud, meeting the morning sun and bracing against the nighttime cold. She contemplates the world through a poise of conviction and fearlessness. Her name is "Dignity."
Postponed due to Covid-19. We are rebuilding the program and will present as soon as possible. Thank you for understanding.
