Mexican Monterey composed for the 100th anniversary of Robert Louis Stevenson, author of Treasure Island and Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Did you know that Robert Louis Stevenson came through South Dakota in 1879? Next is Elegy, a work by Haitian/American composer Lee Holdridge. You may recognize his music if you have ever watched skating in the Olympics, movies such as Mr. Mom, Splash, and TV shows Eight is Enough, Moonlighting, and of course the made for TV series, East of Eden. Price: Selection of folk songs and spirituals by Florence Price a composer whose career spanned both the Harlem and Chicago Renaissances, and the first African American woman to gain national recognition for her works. Beethoven: a masterpiece in the quartet repertoire. Beethoven's response to a violinist complaining of the difficulty, "who cares of the difficulty when the spirit moves me." July 19 and 20; 7:00 PM
A salute to the music of Ennio Morricone and the Spaghetti Westerns. Joined by members of the Dakota Choral and soloist, Dr. Nancy Roberts. More info soon!
Works by Paquito D'Rivera and Salon de Buenos Aires by Argentinian composer, Claudia Montero. July 26 and 27; 7:00 PM
Testimony is written from the Prayer Band experience, and from specific rhythms in African American churches and communities—the ‘Gullah Clap’ (on beats two, two-and, and four) and the ‘Half Clap’ (on beat one only).” Debussy Afternoon of a Faun and Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite both arranged for chamber size with guest soloist and founding member of our festival, Aaron Goldman, principal flute of the National Symphony in Washington, D.C. Bob's Choice! We have let our pianist Bob Koenig decide between Mendelssohn Trio D minor or C minor. It was a close call but the choice is C minor! |
